After losing their Missouri Valley Conference opener at Drake Wednesday, the Indiana State Sycamores return home for a Saturday afternoon contest against the Bradley Braves at the Hulman Center.

Senior Dwayne Lathan was one of two Sycamores to post double-digit scoring at Drake, finishing the contest with a season-high 24 points as he hit 8-of-15 shots from the field, including a 3-pointer, and was 7-of-8 at the free throw line in 28 minutes of action off the bench.

On the year, Lathan leads the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game, while Carl Richard averages exactly 10 points per contest. The Sycamores boast a balanced attack with six players scoring at least 7.6 points per outing.

Bradley will be trying to prevent its current losing streak from reaching a season-long five games. Senior Taylor Brown averages 15.2 points and has scored in double figures in 12 of 13 games to lead the Braves.

The Braves lead the all-time series 48-27, though the Sycamores hold a slim 18-17 edge in games played in Terre Haute.

An up-and-down season for the Butler Bulldogs is currently on an upswing, and the Bulldogs put a modest two-game winning streak on the line today against the Horizon League-leading Milwaukee Panthers.

Butler is coming off a 53-49 win over Green Bay Thursday, evening the team’s conference and overall records. Butler shot just 31% (18-58), including just 18.8% (3-16) from the three-point arc, and was outscored at the free throw line, but somehow found a way to squeak out the win.

Senior Ronald Nored led the team in scoring for the second straight game, the first time he’s done that in his Butler career. For the season junior center Andrew Smith (Covenant Christian) leads the way with a 9.7 per-game average. Though no player averages double figures, seven Bulldogs score at least six points per night.

The Panthers moved to 3-0 in league play with a 57-55 win at Valparaiso Thursday night. Kaylon Williams hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining. Milwaukee has now won 12 straight regular season Horizon League contests dating back to a loss at Valpo in January.

The Panthers have yet to play a game with what was expected to be their regular starting lineup intact, yet are winning, due in large part to their defense. The Panthers have held 13 of their 14 opponents to under 44 percent shooting, and are holding opponents to just 23.5 percent from three-point range. That mark ranks second in the country.

Butler leads the overall series 31-12. Last year Milwaukee swept the regular season but the Bulldogs topped the Panthers in the Horizon League Championship game to earn the automatic bid on their way to a second consecutive national final.

The Purdue Boilermakers put the nation’s fifth-longest home winning streak (25 games) on the line on Saturday when they face Illinois in a battle of teams looking for a 2-0 start in Big Ten play.

Senior forward Robbie Hummel (Valparaiso) heads into Saturday’s game after posting a double-double in each of Purdue’s last two outings. For the year Hummel is third in the Big Ten in scoring at 17.4 points per game.

The Boilermakers win over Iowa on Thursday came in large part thanks to a 36-point effort from the Purdue reserves. Junior D.J. Byrd (North Montgomery) led the way with a season-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while classmate John Hart (Beech Grove) poured in eight first-half points in just 11 minutes of action.

After starting the year 10-0, the Illini have gone 2-2 over their last four, but did win their Big Ten opener Wednesday with a 81-72 double-overtime victory over Minnesota. Five Illini players scored in double figures, led by junior Brandon Paul, who scored a season-high 21 points.

Purdue leads the all-time series 93-84, including five straight victories. With a win, Matt Painter will earn his 150th victory as Purdue’s head coach.

On the season, Broekhoff averages 15.2 points and 9.4 rebounds to lead the Crusaders in both categories.

The Phoenix are coming off their first conference loss, a 53-49 decision at Butler Thursday night. Alec Brown leads the Phoenix with 13.6 points per game and also grabs 7.3 rebounds per game, while Brendan Cougill paces Green Bay on the boards with 7.5 rpg.

Green Bay leads the all-time series 25-15, though the Crusaders have won 10 of the previous 19 games played in Valparaiso.

The Indiana Hoosiers look to bounce back from their first loss of the year as they welcome the second-ranked team in the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes, to Assembly Hall.

Freshman forward Cody Zeller (Washington) leads the Hoosiers averaging 14.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week four times. Junior forward Christian Watford is averaging 13.2 points per game and is third in the Big Ten and 10th in the nation in 3-point field goal shooting (52.4).

Ohio State is coming off a home win over Northwestern in their conference opener Thursday. Senior William Buford scored a career high 28 points to pace the Buckeyes to victory.

Buford leads the Buckeyes in scoring with a 16.6 average, closely followed by Jared Sullinger’s 16.3 and Deshaun Thomas’ (Fort Wayne Bishop Luers) 15.9.

This will be the first time the teams face each other as ranked opponents in six seasons. On January 7, 2006, the 16th-ranked Hoosiers beat the 18th-ranked Buckeyes 81-79 at Assembly Hall.

Indiana leads the all-time series 99-74, including 60-23 in Bloomington. However, the Buckeyes have won six straight over the Hoosiers.
